We are a Rights Respecting School!

This year we have begun our journey to be recognised as a Unicef Rights Respecting School. This means that we are creating a safe and inspiring place for our pupils to learn, where everyone is respected, including our children, and we nurture everyone in our community to help them to thrive. Using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as our guide, we embed these values in daily school life, giving our children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Our pupils have a Rights Respecting Steering Group, which is responsible for working alongside Miss Slingsby to ensure that children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do, weaving them into our everyday work and play. As well as looking at how these rights enrich our day to day lives, we also explore what it means for other children across the globe, and look at ways in which we can be responsible and active global citizens by campaigning and supporting causes across the world as well as close to home, to ensure every child is able to have the same rights and opportunities.

There are over 50 children rights on the UNCRC, all of which are important – Please click here to see attached poster for all of the rights on the UNCRC. We have selected 5 that we are particularly passionate about in our school and a lot of our daily work and wider projects focus on these rights, as well as us exploring all of the other rights throughout the year through our class work and worships:

Every child has the right to:

  • No discrimination (Article 2)
  • An education (Article 28)
  • Health care, clean water, food and a clean environment (Article 24)
  • Food, clothing and a safe home (Article 27)
  • Share their thoughts freely (Article 13)
  • Relax, play and have cultural experiences (Article 31)
  • Know their rights (Article 42)

Please come and speak to our teachers or our pupil leadership group for our Rights Respecting work if you would like to know more.
