Young Carers

Do you look after someone at home and help to keep them safe and well?  Do you do some of the adult jobs at home for your family?  If so, you might be a Young Carer.

A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.

What might a young carer do?

  • Practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping.
  • Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.
  • Emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed.
  • Personal care, such as helping someone dress.
  • Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.
  • Helping to give medicine.
  • Helping someone communicate.
  • Looking after brothers and sisters.

Our Young Carers group meets every week, to have a chat and work on projects using their skills to improve our school environment.  They talk about strategies that can help to make day to day life easier for them, as well as having chance to have some time to themselves, and talk to other pupils who might feel the same.  If you think that you might be a Young Carer, or you know someone else who might be, come and speak to Miss Slingsby or Miss Brimble about how the Young Carers group might be able to help.
