Welcome to Year 1

Below you will find a class handbook relating to life in Year 1

Class Handbook

In Year One we plan to build on the children's learning and experiences as they move from the Early Years Foundation Stage. The children receive an ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum which develops their independence, creative skills and inquisitive minds. Children learn best when they are actively engaged, the learning is relevant and their interests are taken into account so this features hugely in the lessons we plan for our Year One children.

We follow the National Curriculum framework which specifies what is to be taught for English, Maths and Science in Year 1. We use the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme to allow children to make the best possible progress in their reading and writing journey.

We are excited about lots of things that will be happening throughout the year in Year 1 through our Lunar Curriculum. This includes History, Geography, Design Technology, Art and ICT and these subjects are taught through topics and key questions.

Miss D Fisher - Teacher

Throughout the year, we will be reading texts such as The Queen’s Hat, The Jolly Postman and Mole’s Star. Our mastery curriculum in maths will be exploring different units such as place value, shape, fractions and the four operations.

In History, children will be looking at The 1960s. In Geography, we will be looking at The United Kingdom as well as naming and locating capital cities in the UK. Science is enquiry led, focusing on topics such as, seasonal changes, plants, everyday materials and animals including humans.

The children will take part in the Statutory National Phonics Screening in the Summer term and we are already working hard to ensure each child reaches their full potential. We will keep parents and carers informed about how you can help your child at home too.

Below you will find links to the topics we will cover during the term, along with our class timetable:
